The films submitted to the Reel Fear Horror Contest can be submitted by one filmmaker or a filmmaking team. Everyone who submits a film will be interviewed by a panel of judges consisting of people from Project Greenlight Digital Studios, Shudder, and Clive Barker. The panel of judges will choose ten semi-finalists who will move onto the next phase: a community vote. The community vote will determine the fate of one filmmaker. She, he, or they will move on to be one of the five finalists. The other four finalists are chosen by the panel of judges. The finalists will receive $2,000 to film a pre-written movie scene and fellowships to Shudder Labs, which is a workshop dedicated to helping emerging filmmakers improve their craft. Shudder Labs will take place from June 11 – 15, 2017, at the Mohonk Mountain House in Hudson Valley, New York. The judges will pick one winner based on the scene the finalists filmed at Shudder Labs. The winner will receive $300,000 to help them create their feature film. The winner will also receive mentorship from Clive Barker.
It would be quite fun to work with writer, director, and artist Clive Barker, who (if you don’t already know) is probably most well know for writing The Books of Abarat series and the novella The Hellbound Heart, which was later turned into the 1987 movie Hellraiser. Barker wrote and directed Hellraiser. His movie became so popular it spawned a multi-movie franchise of various quality. At the same time, being a “newbie” working with someone as established as Mr. Barker would be very intimidating.
If you’re planning on submitting, please leave a message in the comment section below so readers can check out your film and vote for you. We’d all love to give a tiny bit of help to the next great filmmaker, or filmmakers, make their movie nightmares come true.
